lyrics

HMS Beagle
-----------------

Once upon a midnight dreary,
As I pondered weak and weary
Over many ancient books of lore
Came to me a thought like none before

I fell down, hit the ground, saw my mother run 'towards me
Something old, rich and warm, whispered its secret to me

On a ship the ocean seems surreal and so majestic
Creatures deep, white whales and krakens fast asleep
Was there ever something missing? Something that never felt quite right?
Something changing, shifting, fleeting? Something hidden in plain sight?

Is it just survival? Are we here by chance?
Can science tell us secrets? Can science tell us who we are?

Isn't it peculiar?
Isn't it entirely strange?
I find it so bewildering
The only constant thing in life is change

Suddenly, life seems to me so precious
My daughter's every breath makes me so anxious
Life is accidental, a curious mistake
And we are nothing but the choices that we make

Call me a heretic, call me what you will -
Man has no purpose to fulfill

On a ship the ocean seems serene and so majestic
Sow and you shall reap: a seed of doubt, the fruit of disbelief

Like a seed, so does an idea take root in the earth of people's minds
Like four drops can form an ocean, these words might bring another flood

Time is just like water
Running slow but deep
But I still have my garden, I'll go where my home lies

So let me be peculiar
So let me be called deranged
But like the sun that shines on earth and water
The truth will forever remain
That time is the essence of living
And the essence of living is change
